US CIVIL WAR / INDIAN WARS ERA? LEATHER RIFLE SLING with DOUBLE WIRE BRASS HOOK M. I looked at this with a few people and we all believe it is a Civil War to Indian Wars era sling. It has all of the physical characteristics of an 1800s leather rifle sling. Sharps, Spencer or Henry type of rifle. 51 ¼ inches of leather and the total length is 28 ¼ inches. Keeper hook is in very good and straight condition. It is securely fastened within the end of the sling with strong leather and stitching. On the backside of the sling, there is a hole reinforcement of 24 ¾ inches. Of that, about 2 ¼ inches of it has come undone due to the stitching has broken. The backside is a rough texture common to leather. The hole reinforcement is slightly rough. The leather keeper is securely attached and has a small area of surface cracking. The top of the sling is a mixture of smooth, some surface cracking, and some areas of normal surface wear. The leather is strong and pliable. It is stamped within a rectangle: M. We do not believe this to be the year of manufacture. But rather a lot or other identification number. Currently not sure what this is for. A fine quality vintage oak and leather double gun case by Purdey of London. In the rare motor case format with a lift out tray for the barrels. Fabulous Vintage Arvo Ojala Custom Tooled “BRUNO” Brown Leather Double Cobra Style Gun Sling – RARE. Has stained, engraved lion/tiger, engraved name “Bruno”, nice possibly silver fancy rivets. The leather is thick and strong, with a suede backing, and there are no condition issues. This sling most likely dates to pre-1990′s as Ojala passed in 2005 at age 85, and this does not appear to have been used. Arvo Ojala was a Hollywood technical advisor on the subject of quick-draw with a revolver. He also worked as an actor; his most famous role was that of the unnamed man shot by Marshal Matt Dillon in the opening sequences of the long-running television series Gunsmoke.
