Vintage highly collectable Arvo Ojala padded basket weave rifle sling in very good condition. Sling made in Ca. Before shop closed it’s doors in 1980s. Sling is 43 long and shows no real signs of wear. It is made of thick leather with smooth basket weave on one side and clean, stain free buck skin on the back. Also has two brass Chicago type screws with ornate face on the front and slotted screw head on the back. This is quite a rare piece of his work. Arvo Ojala was the famed gun slinger, trainer, actor, and fast draw champion. Among the TV and film stars that Ojala taught to shoot included James Arness, Robert Culp, James Garner, Kevin Kline, Paul Newman, Hugh O’Brian, Clint Walker, Thomas F. Wilson, and even Marilyn Monroe. He was a close personal friend to Audie Murphy with Murphy becoming Arvo’s children’s Godfather. Arvo is the unnamed man shot by Marshal Matt Dillon in the opening sequences of the long-running television series Gunsmoke. As a joke on the producers, James Arness and Arvo actually did the opener once with Dillon falling to the ground. Arvo actually taught Dillon how to fast draw, and taught many actors in Hollywood in his day. Any leather work by Ojala is highly prized, and difficult to find, especially in this condition. I have yet to see a rifle sling made by him. Both rifle and sling were then stored in a smoke free environment until one month ago. The leather is in beautiful condition with no cracks, separations, or loose stitching. Would make a great addition to a Arvo Ojala collection, or any western collection. This item is western museum quality. Of course, you could just add it to a favorite rifle. This is a real collector piece and I doubt that an item like this could be easily found. Original pre-WWI US Army/USMC M1903 Leather Sling for the Krag Rifle or Carbine – Marked: Rock Island Arsenal 1903 – VERY RARE. The sling is marked Rock Island Arsenal 1903. The marking are very faint but are readable. They are easier to see than they appear in the photo’s. This sling has the correct Blackened Brass hook. The sling is used, see photo’s for condition. The sling has both leather keeper. The leather is soft and supple. There is some minor wrinkling on the surface of the leather. No deep cracks or breaks. The leather has darken with age, but still retains that rich russet brown color. The sticting is all tight and intact. This is an Original Functional pre-WWI era Sling and would look great on a WWI era rifle. These early M1903 Slings are Very RARE. The M1903 sling was patterned after the M1887 Sling and was adopted to be used with the Krag Rifle or Carbine and the NEW M1903 Rifle. The sling was 48 long and had the same type of brass adjustment frog and button as the M1887 sling. The M1903 slings were dated (1903 & 1904 were observed) and all examples were believed to be made by Rock Island Arsenal. While marginally adequate as a carrying sling, it was not long enough to be useful as a shooting aid. The sling was replaced with the M1907 sling, which was used through WWI & WWII. NOTE: this is a collectible item, suitable for a correct historic display. It is NOT recommened for actual use. This is the sling that was commonly used on the M1917 Enfield, the M1 Garand, the M1903 Springfield, the M1903A3 Springfield and the M1941 Johnson Rifles. Check out my other items.
